I am in the process of learning Jimmy Rodgers' song "Peach Picking Time in Georgia", and will perform it this Friday. (Yeah, Scottish accent and all).Anyway, my question is, will a (liberal) American audience be offended by hearing the word "piccaninnies " in the first line of the last verse ?
"When the piccaninnies pick the cotton, I'll pick a wedding ring"
My gut feeling is that I should change it to "cotton-pickers". But I have been wrong before ...........
