Well, some of our flamers actually seem to know a lot about music, and might be able to make a significant contribution here. Some of our flamers are "regulars" who take on a different personality when they post anonymously. I suppose most of the flaming is harmless, but some of it has a sinister quality to it that might be an indication of some serious psychological problems. I know it's tempting to respond to flamers, but my experience is that the best response is no response - and that takes discipline. I know I break that rule myself at times, but I'm in somewhat of a different position.
Generally, though, I think the no-response rule is a good policy. Look on it as positive reinforcement. We respond to people who ask legitimate questions and make constructive comments, and we completely ignore the flamers. If the flamers want a response, maybe they'll be encouraged to learn how to make a constructive contribution to the discussion.
