Hi Anon, if we're talking about the same song, I sang it at my school speech night almost exactly 31 years ago. The other song was 'The Road To Mandalay', which is somewhat more memorable. The chorus bits I recall:

Lindy, did you here that mocking bird sing last night,
Lindy, she was singing so sweet in the moonlight,
Neath the old magnolia tree,
Singin so sweet the melody

PS I would love the words to Road to Mandalay. It's a great sing if you pretend to be a superb baritone like Peter Dawson (who I think made it best known - and an Aussie).
