I think the Jedi were intended to be a religion. Whatshisname that made the movie was an apostle of Joseph Campbell, who is all the time being denounced on the Web as a horseman of the Apocalypse, apostle of New Age religion, and the like (look for Joseph Campbell on googol (not "google" and see what fascinating stuff turns up).
