My flute teacher did not like the idea of sticking PVC in his mouth, athough if it is used for water piping I suppose it probably won't kill you. A friend made me a PVC flute many years ago, and it sounded just fine, though I finally had to give it away because it was too large for my rather small hands. I currently have a plastic Thin Weasel whistle that I'm very fond of. I find it plays better if it is washed in very warm water just before playing.
