I've been singing this song since the early 70's and this is how I remember it
It was recorded by Nadia Catoose(?)who was backed by Martin Carthy. Martin reckoned that he and I were probably the only ones to remember the song - obviously he was wrong
PORT MAHON
by Sidney Carter
In Port Mahon,I went down to the harbour
A tall ship from England sailed down to the quay
And I fell in love with a young English sailor
But he only laughed as he whispered to me
From Port Mahon , I'll soon be gone
Laughing or Weeping the world will go on
To Port Mahon came the orders one morning
To haul up the anchor and not to delay
And so the tall ships sailed away from that harbour
Yet here in my heart I could hear my love say
From Port Mahon , I'll soon be gone
Laughing or Weeping the world will go on
To Port Mahon came news of a battle
But never, no never a letter for me
And many a tall ship sailed into that harbour
But never the one that I waited to see
As years went by, I married another
And many a woman would like to be me
Yet I lie in my bed at night and I listen
To the sound of the waves and the sound of the sea
And I remember that sailor who whispered to me
From Port Mahon , I'll soon be gone
Laughing or Weeping the world will go on
