Subject: Country Music in Glastonbury
I know I posted a while back about Beltane in Glastonbury. Well I went and it was wonderful. Found some lovely people and celebrated it quietly but meaningfully. I struck up a friendship with a guy who gigs at the King Arthur Pub and he invited me to join him one evening. I thought English audiences might enjoy some nice ballads like "Mattie Groves" or "House Carpenter". Boy was I wrong! Had to change quick because the audience obviously didn't like or want anything traditional. But they loved stuff like "Folsom Prison", "Ghost Riders in the Sky" and (this was actually a request) - the theme from "Rawhide" as in Roll 'em roll 'em roll 'em, keep them doggies rollin..... It was an interesting experience! Anyway I also wanted to say that I truly enjoyed the entire trip which included Glastonbury, Wooky Hole Caves and Cheddar Gorge, Belfast, Girvan (Scotland) and the area around Oxford and Windsor. Was well treated by everyone I met except for a grumpy bus driver in London. Always found people to talk to and all the publicans were friendly. I also have to say that although I'd seen lots of postcards of the English countryside, nothing prepared me for how lovely it really is!
