Thread Name: Lyr Req: Sarah (trad Newfoundland)
Subject: Lyr Add: SARAH (trad Newfoundland)
During the weekend I found the lyrics in a songbook at home. Here they are:

SARAH

(Traditional - Arranged by Kevin Blackmore, Wayne Chaulk and Ray Johnson
Arrangement copyright 1990 by Buddy Wasisname & The Other Fellers
From Songbook I, Buddy Wasisname & The Other Fellers)

1. I came upon a charming girl and Sarah is her name.
Her parents want a husband with riches, wealth and fame.
I have the wealth, but riches and fame has never come my way,
'Til the night I went to visit my love and through the keyhole I say:

CHORUS: "Sarah, Sarah, won't you come out tonight?
Sarah, Sarah, the moon is shining bright.
Put your hat and your jacket on; tell your mother you won't be long.
I'll be waiting for you round the corner."

2. My Sarah is a girl like this, oh girl you'll seldom see.
She loves me only for myself and not for my money.
Every night at eight o'clock, she puts her needle away,
And standing just outside her door, and through the keyhole say: CHORUS

3. One night a little after eight I crept up to her door.
I whispered, "Sarah, darling," as I'd often done before.
(spoken) "I'll give you Sarah," said a voice and down I went to flop,
(spoken) And her mama sang as she kicked me all around the shop: CHORUS

4. The old woman thought she killed me and I let her think so too.
As I laid there on the floor, I scarce knew what to do.
At last she said, "He's alive or dead, my girl. I'll let him wed."
And up I jumps, says, "Thank you, ma'am," and to my girl I said: CHORUS

(In a footnote, Ray Johnson writes: "Sarah-- Back in 1954, when I was a lad, I heard my father, the late Johnny Johnson, sing this song. Over the years I memorized it and learned to act out the song just as my father did. I believe that my father learned it from John Joe Kelly, a resident of Job's Cove. He was supposed to have been a fine tenor singer. ---Ray")
