In this last Sunday's paper, when asked to elaborate on saying he didn't consider himself to be a really great singer as much as a good stroyteller:My voice is raspy and crusty. I'm in tune most of the time, but there are people who do vocal gymnastics far better than I do. But sometimes the gymnastics get in the way of the familiarity of a song. A song tells a story. People want to hear the same lyrics again. They get used to the familiarity. There are singers, and there are people who can sing. I am one of those.
Right on, Kenny! He is enjoying a No. 1 country hit and a new platinum album for the first time since around 1983. Great comeback!
