He has the booming voice that a lead singer ought to have, though his girth and greying hair might be thought handicaps to a career in rock. But then, Jerry Garcia pulled in the crowds, and so do the 4Heads, who are currently electrifying audiences all over East Anglia.

Class act: the four colleagues ( John Knowles, Rob Jackson, Tony Blake and Neil Beacock) adopt a more sober guise While Knowles moves desks in a classroom to make room for the band's kit, Rob Jackson makes the typically low-key entrance of a bass guitarist. Sucking on a pipe, he has a quick word with the school caretaker about a cup of tea. As head of Old Catton, he's an avuncular figure - but when the lights go down, I sense, this man can rock.
