BTW: I'm not so sure, now I see the verse:

but I seem to remember hearing once that this song was inspired by the practice, at one time, of including a soupçon of marijuana seed in canaries' "Singing Mix".

Apparently they would irradiate the seed first to make it sterile, to stop you having a cannabis crop growing under the canary cage ... and so the police did not accept it as an explanation for otherwise inexplicable heads of weed.
