That thread mentioned way above by Catspaw49 needs to be treated with some caution. I gave a lot of fairly shorthand suggestions to Rick Fielding ... based on what I believed that he already knew in other fields of music. It seems I was pretty right - and he was able to quickly use the brief suggestions to expand his playing.

If you are starting from scratch, you need to get the basics down first before much of what I said is useful ... then again, you may be a whiz in other areas, in which case, pick it up and go wherever you wish!
