Thread Name: Lyr Req: We Didn't Know (Paxton) & protest songs
Subject: RE: Can you help find a protest song from the 60s
It was a Tom Paxton song
(Sample verse)
We didn't know, said the Burgomeister
About the camps at the edge of town
It was Hitler and his crew,
Who tore the German nation down
We saw the cattle cars, it's true
And maybe they carried a Jew or two.
We heard the cries as they rumbled through
But what did you expect us to do

We didn't know at all, We didn't hear a thing
You can't hold us to blame
What could we do
It was a terrible shame
But we can't bear the blame
It wasn't us, We didn't know.

I tried the DT under [Tom Paxton] and got over 30 songs, none of which fitted. [we didn't know] yield two inappropriate songs. So you'll have to wait for another Mudcatter to give you more verses - or find a T Paxton songbook or a library full of back issues of Sing Out, because I know I did see the song in print years ago.
