This is an Australian song whose tune is missing from the archive. If my memory serves me correctly, the text was written by Ned Kelly, the township of Greta being his home place. As Australia’s most famous outlaw he was also an articulate writer, having penned some marvellous vitriol in his well known Jerilderie Letter. Bob Bolton or others please correct me, but I think Ned wrote this shortly before his death by hanging at Old Melbourne Gaol. I have heard the yarn that the serving Judge, (later Sir) Redmond Barry hurried the case through on a Monday, so that he would not miss out on attending the Melbourne Cup horse race the following day. (My source for this was Jim Buchanan - I hope he is still alive and well, having not seen him for 10 years).
