Trust me to get hung up with minutiae, but was there significance to the love's hair being black? Was it code for foreign or exotic, and therefore forbidden, or anyway not proper ancestry? I never thought of this before (and it may of course be perfectly obvious to everyone but me) but that would explain the song's sadness.
