Rick, I have an old three-head Marantz (CD-330) portable stereo recorder, which has been superb for 25 years or so, and an even older Uher equivalent. Only downside to both is that they closed my mind to the minidisc, which in my view eclipses them on every front when it comes to capturing sound in the field. I've just bought a Sharp (obsolete model) minidisc recorder in a second-hand store for 50GBP, and will never return to the mechanics and tribulations of tape-transport glitches, motor noise, bulky batteries etc, except out of historical curiosity.
