Thread Name: Lyr Req: Broad Black Brimmer
Subject: Lyr Add: BROAD BLACK BRIMMER (Wolfe Tones version)
I have it by the Wolfe Tones, and it isn't in the Trad nor could I find a thread about it... can anyone fill the little holes in the lyrics? Also, feel free to correct lyrics throughout... I'm making vaguely educated guesses.

Thanks!

BROAD BLACK BRIMMER

The Wolfe Tones' version as remembered by Mrrzy

Anything in parens is shouted by the band; the rest is sung by the lead singer.

Chorus:
It's just a broad black brimmer, ribbons frayed and torn
By the careless whisk of many's the mountain breeze
An old trench coat that's all battle-stained and worn
And breeches almost threadbare at the knees
A Sam Brown belt with a buckle big and strong
And a holster that's been empty many's the day (but not for long!)
But when men (…) Ireland's freedom
The one she'll choose to lead'm'll
Wear the broad black brimmer of the IRA.

There's a uniform that's hanging in what's known as Father's room
A uniform so simple in its style
It's got no braid nor gold nor silk, no hat with feathered bloom
Yet me mother has preserved it all the while
One day she made me try it on, a wish of mine for years
"In memory of your father, dear" she said
And when I put the Sam Brown on she was smiling though her tears
As she placed the broad black brimmer on me head
Chorus
It was the uniform being worn (…)
When he reached me mother's homestead on the run
It was the uniform being worn in that little church below
When our Father Mike he blessed the pair as one
After truce and treaties and the parting of the ways
He wore it when he marched off with the rest (And the best!)
And when they bore his body down (…)
They placed a broad black brimmer on his breast.
Chorus
Repeat first verse with rousing drums and fifery
