"Philos" and "eros" both mean love. The distinction is the kind of love. Many English words derive from "philos," including "philosophy" (love of wisdom) and "philanthropy" (love of mankind). "Logos" means word. You can put the two together and get "philology" (love of words). A good friend of mine majored in Romance philology, i.e. the origin and development of the Romance languages.
