There was a piece on NPR this morning on the late Stanley Kubrick. His wife was interviewed, and discussed an anti-war film he had directed (I don't recall the name). She had played the part of a German woman, who at the end of the film was made to sing, I believe for victorious American troops, and the song was intended to be as sad, and as evocative, as could be found. The song they played certainly works. It could easily be the most common German song; when I was in Germany, the first verse was sung all the time, it goes:

Es war einmal ein treuer Hussar,
der liebt' sein Maedchen ganz und gar.
ein ganzes Jahr und noch viel mehr,
die Liebe hat gar kein ende mehr.
ein ganzes Jahr und noch viel mehr,
die Liebe hat gar kein ende mehr.
