In Edinburgh many years ago there was a shop at the bottom of Leith Walk with a beautiful gilded window sign reading "Videos for all ocassions". There were so many spelling mistakes in professionally made signs in Edinburgh in these days that I am convinced to this day that signwriting firms were pressured to hire dyslexics.

While installing cabinets in the new DHSS Centre in Livingston in the 70's , I witnessed a large plastic lettered sign being erected which read "Data Preperation Unit". Ten days later I was finishing up my work and the sign was still there. I asked the Clerk of Works when it would be changed, and he stared at it and asked what was wrong with it.

I am aware that some people consider spelling words correctly to be a sign of pedantry. If that is so, I am a pedant and proud of it.
