RobDale. I think what I would have done would have been to say the word brilliant gets bandied about too lightly. If we use too many strong words like that, what do we reserve for the truly brilliant in every field. I mean, we might say our child's stick drawing is brilliant, but where does that leave poor old Van Gogh? On a par?

I think it would be diplomatic to say that you enjoyed their committment or whatever positive aspect you can find. I've lost count of the number of performers I love listening to because of their obvious pleasure in singing and their lovely personalities. And some people really know how to put over a song, regardless of their technical ability, and that always has the edge over a nice-but-dull performance. Still...the object is to have someone do both!
