The Young Pretender (Bonny Prince Charley) is the "A Shéarlais óig, a mhic Rí Shéamais" which appears in the first line of oldest version of the song. He is the one who was welcomed home - to Gaeldom - to claim his birthright in 1745. As one might expect, Irish survival lyrics were to be found in the part of Ireland closest to Scotland and in which Irish survived longest.
