Lately I always use http://www.mapquest.com/ to plan my route whenever I drive to any unfamiliar place. I don't know whether it works for places outside the US, though. It also computes estimated travel time pretty well. I recommend you use it before you leave home. It might be hard to find a computer when you're travelling. Tourist information centers are not as easy to find in the US as in Britain, either.
