Another proud parent here. My daughter (oldest of three kids) heads off to her freshman year at Tulane University next month, with the benefit of a $16,000 academic scholarship. Doesn't cover the whole cost by a long shot (doesn't even cover half, actually), but it sure makes a difference.College got so expensive when, and because, society bought into the fallacy that it's the only way to get educated and/or get a decent job. It is neither, but the notion that "you have to go to college, spend whatever they charge, take whatever courses they require, etc." is so firmly ingrained that it is hardly questioned these days. And, while there is some level of competition among the various colleges out there, collectively the college industry benefits from the perception that it's the only route to a fulfilling life.
Still, I'm proud of my daughter, and think she will do well.
