Here's the corniest country song I know.... Sorry I'm late to the party - I was at the Winnipeg Folk Fest last week! Woo hoo!

OLD RED
Sung to the tune of: "Old Shep"
New words by Al Boyce 7/12/2001

Oh, when I was a girl, Old Red was an egg
Through the henhouse and barnyard we'd roll
Just a girl and her egg, we were both full of fun
As a friend, Red was worth more than gold.
I remember the time before Easter one year
When Red would have "dyed" without doubt
Mom was prepared to dip Red in the pot
I jumped in and pulled Old Red out

As the days rolled along, Old Red he cracked out
A chick newly hatched from his shell
And as he emerged, and he looked in my eyes
I could see Red would be my best pal.
With wings that were trembling, Red struck up a pose
And strained his cute beak to the sky
Then he crowed a clear note, so loud and so pure
His song made me so glad I cried.

Old Red gave his call, and he woke one and all
As he sang every day from his post
He was the best rooster a girl ever had
In my pride I tried hard not to boast
Then I came home one day, dinner was on the stove
From inside I still heard Old Red's cry
Old Red's goose was cooked, but still he sang on
As he flew to his sweet by and by....
