Gweebarra Shore CD PRCDO5 © Maggie Boyle 1998

Maggie's Dad and Mum left Derryloughan, Gweebarra, Donegal, and settled in London, but he often reminisced about the place, and the characters there. The song was written by Kevin, after their Dad's death in 1989.

Photographs, faded in sepia
Look at that, there's your grandparents
And what about that ---
I'll tell you the stories, there may be some more
About Derryloughan on the Gweebarra shore

There's Peg O'Neill, sits in an empty house
--- --- --- piled on her mantelpiece,
Letters from her sons
All in America, gone to the war
None will come back to the Gweebarra shore.

Big Colm ---
Called in to pay us his best regards
Said he'd just finished the --- --- ---
In moleskins and corduroys off for the night
Away into Blenty(?) to look for a fight

Twas hard enough, just makin' a living
But if you were stuck --- the --- would fix your window pane
And tell of the wonders he'd seen the world o'er
While he's off fighting this war to end wars

And Annie Friel, she didn't think much of the auld regime
She put it like this
-----that mighty plan
But what of that Canon who says we can't dance?
Him with his toilet brought over from France!

-------
Johnny will come with his pots and pans
Play with a beauty to cast your heart away
And one and another will take to the floor
Sing the old songs of the Gweebarra shore
And Peg O'Neill sits in the empty house
-----
While piled on her mantelpiece
Letters from her sons
All in America, gone to the war
Not one came back to the Gweebarra shore

In '83 I saw it all planted
With forestry, the paths all grown over
----------
Look at the photographs, see it once more
That's Derryloughan on the Gweebarra shore.
