Nightwing, not quite right!

Numeric character codes are Unicodes which is standardized (platform-independant).

The symbolic character codes are just synonyms for some of the numeric character codes for people who can't remember numbers. Most people can remember " easier than " (or was it # ;-)

Exceptions: the codes from € to ÿ. These are taken from the current codepage (which can be set for each webpage).
