It's about as versatile as you want it to be. As Bill said, there are modal tunings and a lot of one-off tunings, and you can single note strum, fingerpick, learn chords and other strums and picking patterns, use it to play solos or only as a highlight in a cappella songs..........Fun instruments and they can be as easy or as hard as you want.....Just depends on what you want to do.
