Murray, the way I interpret that picture - although it is unclear - is that the harp is held prependicular to his body but the angle of the artist's view is from the side so it looks like it is held against his body. When you look at his forearm, & hand touching the harp strings, it is held straight out in front.

I'm open to other opinions but it looks to me like the usual harper's position.
