It finally came to me why the songs that make me feel good actually do. I suppose there are lots of folk songs in my list and certainly some Pat Sky stuff, but many of them are pop songs of the time, whatever time that was. They all evoke pleasant memories and can often take me to very specific time and place.

Another "Feelin' Good" song for me is "The Letter" by the Boxtops. I can put myself into an extremely specific time and place.....and I mean to the second. I'm a couple of years into college and walking back to my dorm. I have just left Joyce at her dorm and her perfume is still in my brain as is the song that was playing in the Snack Bar at the Alumni Building......"The Letter." It's April, about 4 in the afternoon and I'm outside Kentucky Hall, hustling along so I can get back and pick up Joyce for supper and the evening. It's blue sky day and about 55 degrees......I may never have felt better in my life than I did at that moment......except when Karen agreed to marry me.

Over 30 years later it's as clear and distinct as though it just happened. Wonder if Joyce has enjoyed her life as much as I have mine? Haven't seen her in 25 years or more..........The first real love, never forgotten is it?
