Along with other luminaries already mentioned, Guy Clark would be near the top of my list. Also Ian Tyson. James Keelaghan and Lennie Gallant are fine current Canadian writers, and Murray McLauchlan has turned out an impressive body of work over the years.I think fewer women come immediately to my mind because, to generalize horribly, not as many of them write in the traditional folk idiom that interests me. Marychapin Carpenter is quite wonderful, so I think is Cheryl Wheeler, and Laura Smith.
