I wanted to mention that the word Jesus uses askig Peter to wait up with him in AMHRÁN NA PÁISE fairigí has the same root as the Irish word for wake, which is faire. My father-in-law tells me he recalls sitting up all night with the deceased in many tenament rooms. That is the original meaning of wake. He remembers seeing men meeting keeners in the street and paying them off to keep them out of the wake, so this is a custom which did cross the Atlantic, but has not survived.
