Turning, I catch sight of the red wagon, paint flaking to reveal a dull grey metal skeleton. It lingers dusty in the garage, black handle crooked - skewed as a broken bone. Memories assail. Cracked concrete sidewalks. Crunching colorful leaves. Tracks through dewy grass. The warmth of the sun upon metal. Warmth seeping into small wriggling bodies at play. Laughing with abandon. Now I contemplate its demise. It is devoid of the muscle of play, the blood of life. It is a carcass bleached clean of flesh. Useful only in its ability to conjure vestiges of a once joyous existence.
