From the Admiralty Manual of Seamanship 1937, word for word:-

FAKE:- A circle or ring formed by coiling a rope.

FLAKE:- To arrange a rope or howser in layers so that it will run clear.

I also was in the RN, dont try to teach your granny to suck eggs :-)
