"Chip Taylor is a renowned singer/songwriter who penned hits for everyone from the Troggs and Jimi Hendrix ("Wild Thing") to Janis Joplin ("Try Just A Little Bit Harder"), through numerous cuts by country and R&B artists. The London Bootleg Sessions (Train Wreck Records) is a two-CD set, the first of which was recorded with an electric band in London, and the second, in an acoustic format in New York. The 25 cuts, which are mostly in the outlaw-country mode, show why Taylor is a revered cult figure. On the first disc, the evocative "Annie On Your Mind," with harmonies from Lucinda Williams, is a standout as is the coarser, more rock-based "Holy Shit," which appears to have an autobiographical slant. Williams also duets with Taylor on "The Ghost Of Phil Sinclair" on the NY sessions. The second disc shows a more rugged and rural storytelling Taylor. He shows his immense lyrical and melodic sensibilities in the Dylan-ish "I Ain't Leaving Without You" and the jagged country of "Lefty Frizzel." All in all, this is one hell of an album by a master songwriter. If you like great songwriters, this disc should prove interesting.
