Fossilised ivory pins are not going to make a huge difference to the sound of a factory Martin.

However if you invest in a truly hand-built instrument, then you WILL notice an immediate and profound difference in tone according to the pin material, and experimenting with different pins can indeed be a way to achieving your desired sound.
