The wooden schooner was built in 1921 by Admiral Donald Baxter MacMillan (1874-1970), who made 29 voyages to the Arctic between 1908 and 1954 - 26 of these voyages were aboard the Bowdoin, which MacMillan named after his alma mater. I understand the hull is made of wood because it can withstand the crushing effect of ice better than a metal hull.
