My first exposure to fussball was to see Aston Vanilla (easily licked) play against (oh! who cares?). I was only four and bored out of my folkie cranium and when the pitch emptied I asked to go home immediately.
Uncle assured me they would come back because they had left the ball in the centre spot.
Now I offer no prizes but how long ago was it that a ball could be left in the middle of the field AND stay there 20 minutes?
There is a case to be made for the folk nature of the singing on the terraces and the wide appeal amongst the latter day plebs but.....
