There's certainly nothing new about Doonesbury's political position. I have fond memories of Trudeau's depiction of Frank Rizzo, years ago when he was mayor of Philadelphia (when he was alive!), with machine gun in hand, refusing to allow some of the main characters on a cross-country trip to enter "his" city!
