Sounds to me like there was a bit of (at best) dubious stereotyping going on affecting at least two nationalities. I don't know if I'd describe the scene as surreal so much as offensive. Still (and here I'll indulge in some stereotyping of my own!), trust the toffs to have bugger all in the way of imagination.
