Thread Name: Lyr Req: When you & I were young, Maggie - Redpath
Subject: Lyr Add: WHEN YOU AND I WERE YOUNG, MAGGIE
Here are the lyrics I learned from my grandmother in the 1940's/'50's. Actually, it is a composite of those lyrics and some I have heard more recently (e.g., from The Irish Tenors). Take your pick, I guess.

Somewhere I have the authors' names, I think. I will post them if I find them.

Arjay

"I wandered today to the hill, Maggie, to watch the scene below,
The creek and the creaking old mill, Maggie,
Where we met in long, long ago.
The green grove is gone from the hill, Maggie,.
Where first the daisies sprung.
The creaking old mill is still. Maggie,
Since you and I were young.

A city so silent and gray, Maggie,
Where the young and the brave[?] and the best,
In silent white mansions of stone, Maggie,
Have all found a place of rest.
Is built where we once used to play [stray?], Maggie
[da da da da da da da da da]
[da da da da da da da da da, Maggie, since you and I were young.

They say I am feeble with age, Maggie,
My steps are much slower than then.
My face is a well written page, Maggie,
And time alone was the pen.
They say we have outlived our time , Maggie,
As dated as song that we've sung.*
But to me you're as fair as you were, Maggie,
When you and I were young.

And now we are aged and gray, Maggie,
The trials of life nearly done.
Let us sing of the days that are gone, Maggie,
When you and I were young.

*Alternate lyric:
Now we are aged and gray, Maggie,
As spray from the white breakers flung.
But to me you're as fair as you were, Maggie,
When you and I were young.
