Here in Calgary, far from the terrible events, the Herald reports: "Women who traditionally wear a chador, or head scarf that leaves only the face exposed, are also being encouraged to temporarily stop wearing the garment in an attempt to make them less recognizable as Muslims." ... "Threatening and racist phone calls have been made to several mosques in the city, as well as to people's work places and homes. Khadim Hussain, president of the Ahmadiyya Muslim community, was among those asking women to refrain from wearing a chador. Hussain also recommended that Muslim families have a large stash of cash on hand in the event of full-scale war." "The fanatics have twisted everything around the wrong way. Islam doesn't teach violence" he said at the Marlborough Community Centre. The Muslim Council of Calgary has taken out full page advs. to condemn the "barbaric and ruthless" terrorist actions. On behalf of the 40,000 Muslims in Calgary, they "offer deep and sincere condolences and sympathies to the victims, their families, relatives and friends." Everyone in the Muslim community is urged to donate blood and to do whatever they can to support those in the United States who are in need of help. (It should be noted here that Yasser Arafat was among Palestinians donating blood for victims in New York). I sincerely hope that actions against our large, productive and peaceful Muslim community here in Calgary and elsewhere does not go beyond words, but many are fearful of the future in our nations.
