High school French and Latin don't give me much of a start on Italian ... so I referred this to Callie - and this is her (work in progress) reply:

At last ...

This isn't a song - that is, it doesn't scan or rhyme regularly, and the tone is narrative. This is a story. It's not very well written. There are lots of ambiguous and clumsy sentences. Here's a rough translation.

(Callie)

Giuseppe Musolino, giovane carbonaio calabrese, fa la corte alla bella Mara;
Jospeh Musolino, young Calabrian coal miner, courts the beautiful Mara;

ma il padre di lei vorrebbe che sposasse Don Pietro, capo della mafia.
But her father wants her to marry Don Pietro, mafia boss.

Il giorno della festa del paese, Musolino ha una violenta lite con Don Pietro:
The day of the town's feast day, Musolino has a violent exchange with Don Pietro.

verso sera questo viene assassinato.
Towards evening Don Pietro is killed.

Musolino è del tutto estraneo al delitto, dovuto alla mafia:
Musolino is **** (I have to work this out)

malgrado questo, il giovane carbonaio viene arrestato e processato.
Despite this the young miner is arrested and goes to trial.

Le deposizioni di tre testimoni falsi lo fanno condannare a ventun'anni.
Three false witness statements land him a 21 year sentence.

Evaso dal carcere dopo due anni,
Escaping from prison after 2 years,

Musolino uccide durante una processione, uno dei testimoni, poi fugge sui monti:
Musolino kills, during a procession, one of the 'witnesses' then escapes to the mountains:

qui lo raggiunge Mara.
Here he is joined by Mara.

La vendetta non e ancora completa:
The vendetta is not yet complete.

un altro dei suoi accusatori deve pagare il fio.
Another accusor has to pay ****??

L'ultimo dei testimoni falsi è un medico,
The final false witness is a doctor

che però viene risparmiato da Musolino.
He is spared by Musolino

Braccato non soltanto dalla polizia, ma anche dai sicari assoldati dal vero assassino,
Surrounded by Police and also by associates of the real killer

Musolino decide di tentare la fuga all'estero insieme a Mara,
Musolino decides to escape overseas with Mara

ch'è incinta.
who is pregnant.

Prima di >partire vogliono confessarsi,
Before the leave they go to Confession

ma si vedono negata l'assoluzione
but they are denied absolution.

All'uscita dal santuario, Mara viene uccisa per errore dall'uccisore di Don Pietro:
At the Church door, Mara is accidentally killed by Don Pietro's killer.

Musolino la vendica, uccidendo, dopo una lotta corpo a corpo, l'assassino.
Musolino vindicates her, killing, after a battle, the killer.

Poi si costituisce ai carabinieri.
Then he gives himself in to the Police.

I certainly couldn't see how the words could fit a "ballad meter" - but they could be a spoken as an epic tale (?).
