After the Union of the Parliaments (Scotland and England in 1707?) many Scots Members were regularly teased by the English Members for their accents. One Scots Lord who had spoken repeatedly of "watter" was asked "Does my noble friend spell "watter" with two "t"'s?". He replied "Na, na my lord, but I spell 'Mainners' wi twa "n"s"
