Peg, I don't recall a reference to this in "The Golden Bough", but perhaps there should have been one.

"Cracking a nut" has also often been used as a metaphor for discovering the solution to a puzzle or problem. I can't see how this can connect to Halloween, but I thought I would mention it in case someone else sees a link.
