Once we were in school - it was just about the ONLY night of the year we didn't have to be in early - the fact that there was a horde of us without going outside the family didn't hurt either - (up to eight - depending on who had parties, etc to go to) - and we went a few blocks in all directions from our house - hitting just about anyone who wasn't a "summer person" - as I said - mostly home-made treats back then - popcorn balls, freshly fried doughnut holes, spiced cider, taffy, fudge, rice krispy squares, cookies, hermits, - though some candy - mostly loose "Penny candy" type stuff. Our immediate neighbors actually gave away *gasp* FULL SIZE (!) Snickers (frozen) - and were quite popular! And then we'd end with a walk past "the graveyard" - hoping that the White Lady of Shawme Lake wouldn't put in an appearance. (I usually skipped that part)
