The shanty chorus "John kanakanaka tooray ay" is actually French:

Jean qui n'a qu'un nacre, tous raillaient

that is

Jean who has only one "mother-of-pearl", everybody was jeering.

At least, in my French dictionary, that's the only meaning given for "nacre".
