Surely it depends why and how they wanted to play the other gig. If they were doing it openly to advertise and promote the 'real' show, as I think Clinton's suggesting, then that's pretty admirable - if it's a question of "here's just a sample of what you'll hear if you come along to the arts centre", then that's fine. I've seen artists busking outside a venue for that very reason, to drum up business, putting in some promotional work without detracting from the 'real' show. But if they just wanted to make an extra bit of money and didn't care about any adverse effect on the show they've been booked to do, that's wrong. And in practical terms, audiences won't come back the next night to see somebody they liked - people just don't have the time or money to do that these days. Well, not in Britain, they don't. Sorry, folks, I come down on the side of the arts centre, and say the band was acting unethically. - Ian B
