LH, before looking at the link Wolfgang posted, I was going to suggest the pulp novels of the 30s and 40s. Their covers were prime examples of lurid color illustration and inluded green aliens. This is also where BEMs ( Bug-eyed-Monsters) came from.

It was neat that Damon Knight got into the dicussion on that list.
