Thread Name: Robert Lowry - texts and tunes
Subject: Robert Lowry - texts and tunes
Robert Lowry was a Baptist minister, church musician and literature professor of the latter half of the 19th century. A current (Nov '01) thread deals with the song "How Can I Keep from Singing?", for which he wrote the original tune and probably most of the traditional words. This is in the Digitrad but the DT doesn't mention him there. The only song in the DT that overtly credits Lowry is "Shall We Gather at the River?" (incidentally, tune-name nomenclature for the tune of "Shall We Gather" is "Hanson Place). In the "How Can I Keep from Singing?" thread I mentioned his "Chorus of Fire". Also, Lowry wrote the tune of the English original underlying the Hawaiian Christmas carol "Nu 'Oli" (the English text is variously credited to him or to Fanny Crosby—both I and the Cyberhymnal folks are looking for the rest of the verses—the Hawaiian is, of course, by Laiana, the Catherine-Winkworth-in-drag of Hawaiian hymnody). Another one of Lowry's important contributions was the addition of the refrain to transform the staid Isaac Watts call-to-worship hymn "Come, ye that love the Lord" (to St. Thomas) into the foot-stompin' processional/recessional "Marching to Zion". I invite people to post Lowry info (including additional texts or tunes) that goes beyond what is in the Cyberhymnal bio.

I also thought I would take this opportunity to try out the MID2TXT program and see if I could produce posts you all could turn into simple MIDIs. So here is my attempt at the tune of "Chorus of fire":
